The Best Cards for Poker Home Games – April 6th, 2013

I know this may look like a strange post – but hang in there – I actually have something to say here. I notice a lot of people play poker with crazy kinds of cards, and recently, I was invited to a home game where they had black EPOC cards on a dark red poker table. Obviously this was ridiculous, but the players Bee Club Specialin the game were used to it so nobody said anything. Fair enough, I ended up winning 4 buy-ins with the black cards, so I was ok with it too. ;-)

Still, there’s good cards and bad cards – and in my book, there’s also a perfect deck of cards for a home poker game.

Paper or plastic?

I know plastic playing cards can take a lot of wear, which makes them the economical option – but I still like my cards to feel like the old Las Vegas – so I use the Bee Club Special cards. They feel great, you have them with a small and a jumbo index and they are supercheap!

Jumbo or normal index?

Normal index, please! The normal index peels way better, and thus it makes more sense for poker. In Europe, we are used to playing with Jumbo indexes, but I’m not a big fan…

So – buy the cheap ones, OR invest in GOOD plastic cards like KEMS or Fourniers. Don’t go buying cheap plastics, or uncoated paper cards.

Poker Tips: Understanding the importance of position – April 30th, 2012

Position during a game of poker refers to the poker player’s opportunity to act relative to the other players. If you are among the first ones to act, then it is said that you are in an early position while if your are almost last, then you are in a late position. Those who have players acting before and after them is said to be in a middle position.

Advantages of a late position

As you learn the ins and outs of playing poker, you will also understand the advantages of acting late or being in a late position. One of the crystal clear advantages of a late position is having a good idea of the strength of the oppositions. In case you everyone has folded and you are only to face the blinds, it is most likely that you are holding the best hands so you can play it aggressively. The other players will act before you do so you have more information before you decide what to do.

Disadvantages of an early position

The scenario is so different when you have to act early. Since you have an incomplete information, the process of deciding what to do with your hand is a lot tougher. You do not have the luxury of knowing what the other players will do. You will still be acting using incomplete information for the rest of the round since the other players will be acting after you. This may cost you some money and you also do not know if the other players benefited from what you did. It may also lead you to check when in fact the best move for your hand is to bet.

Playing position

Never underestimate what you can do when you are in the right position. Almost all decisions should take into consideration where you are at on the poker table. It will be best if you play most of your cards when you are coming from a late position. When in an early position, only make use of premium hands if you must and this will somehow offset your gameplay after the flop.

Conduct Associated with a Poker Game – May 16th, 2009

Playing poker is not only about the rules of the game and its strategies but also about the norms associated with the game, especially in the context of accepted behavior and conduct that is to be respected and followed at all times. In this article we shall discuss some behavioral conduct and procedures that are associated with a poker game.

One of the first norms of the game is that players cannot carry and place cash on the table. Many peoplepoker photos mistakenly believe that the game is played using actual cash. In reality, the cash is not allowed at the table and in order to be able to play poker one has to exchange the cash for playing chips. Sometimes individuals who are not in the know about this rule may carry cash to the table without the dealer realizing and may try to use the cash in the game. In the event of such a happening, in case the round is already under way, the dealer can allow the cash to be used provided that the other players in the game do not raise any objections. Once the particular round has been completed, the cash remaining with the player has to be changed for playing chips and counters.

Another procedure involves banning the use of playing chips and counters from any other casino. The use of casino chips from another establishment is prohibited and in the event that a player carries such pieces to the table unnoticed they are to be categorized in the same variety as that of cash. In other words, the player will have to forfeit the chips in favor of chips of the home establishment.

Using the chips of another player is strictly prohibited. Also a single hand can only be played by an individual and players cannot exchange their position with others and one cannot “fill in” for another player.
