Position during a game of poker refers to the poker player’s opportunity to act relative to the other players. If you are among the first ones to act, then it is said that you are in an early position while if your are almost last, then you are in a late position. Those who have players acting before and after them is said to be in a middle position.
Advantages of a late position
As you learn the ins and outs of playing poker, you will also understand the advantages of acting late or being in a late position. One of the crystal clear advantages of a late position is having a good idea of the strength of the oppositions. In case you everyone has folded and you are only to face the blinds, it is most likely that you are holding the best hands so you can play it aggressively. The other players will act before you do so you have more information before you decide what to do.
Disadvantages of an early position
The scenario is so different when you have to act early. Since you have an incomplete information, the process of deciding what to do with your hand is a lot tougher. You do not have the luxury of knowing what the other players will do. You will still be acting using incomplete information for the rest of the round since the other players will be acting after you. This may cost you some money and you also do not know if the other players benefited from what you did. It may also lead you to check when in fact the best move for your hand is to bet.
Playing position
Never underestimate what you can do when you are in the right position. Almost all decisions should take into consideration where you are at on the poker table. It will be best if you play most of your cards when you are coming from a late position. When in an early position, only make use of premium hands if you must and this will somehow offset your gameplay after the flop.
